For Rum Sponge Edition 9* we return once again to Guyana and a particularly elegant and complex old example of Uitvlugt.
Distilled in 1989 and aged for 31 years in a refill barrel, this has been bottled at its natural cask strength, which just so happens to be bang on 50.0%.
Lazily tropical, intriguing and exotically tinged medicines, rustic breads in warm sunshine, idling oily motors and big yawns! This is a rum to flake out and lounge with in stretchy pants on well-shaded bean bags with suitable volumes of sun-lotion at hand.
A rum to pack for holidays, or to simply sit and sip beneath the glare of your favourite halogen bulb as you remember the lost days of your youth from the poky comfort of an Autumnal Scottish office.
Nose: slightly more docile with a seemingly younger profile. That means some fruity notes (candied), with some muscovado sugar, bramble and plums before it includes fresh soil and spice. Hints of oil paint and some metal polish.
Mouth: more intense now, with more varnish, engine oil and old copper. Roasted herbs. Mint liqueur, anise and liquorice. Underneath there’s a dark sweetness of fruit paste, chocolate and a light bitter edge.
Finish: long, with woody notes, burnt sugar, bitter almonds and Mediterranean herbs.
