Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer 2020 Year Old Wine Sponge Edition No.1 ABV 15% 70CL

Zind-Humbrecht

It is a 'single cask' wine from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace. The varietal is Gewurztraminer, from the 2020 harvest in the famous Grand Cru Rangen Vineyard.

The barrel this wine was made in was in fact the same one used to mature Whisky Sponge Edition 4, a 2002 Port Charlotte. This was a cask we had purchased from the winegrower Olivier Humbrecht, and from this an idea was hatched to use this cask to create a one-off, single cask wine as the very first Wine Sponge.

The pressed juice of these Gewurztraminer grapes was settled and filled into the ex-Port Charlotte barrel to ferment naturally in the Domaine's cave. From this only 123 magnums were eventually yielded.

The wine itself is immensely charismatic and bone dry. A powerful, beautifully structured example of Rangen Gewurztraminer, with a much deeper interplay from the cask itself thanks to being made in the barrel, rather than simply 'finished' in it.
