This one is from the old Caol Ila distillery. Colour: dark gold. Nose: what a superb attack, very medicinal, on bandages, embrocations, camphor… A very delicate, yet very bold peat, mixed with quite some cocoa and oak. The sherry is very discreet but it’s well there. Also quite some grain, mash, porridge… cider apples… Very pure! And what a great balance in this oldie! Mouth: a perfect mouth feel, bold and punchy at that. A beautiful sweetness, with ‘of course’ lots of peat, which make the malt perfectly ‘compact’ (and not narrow at all). Develops on liquorice, roots, pepper, apple pie… And always this superb peatiness. I love how it stays very clean and, again, so compact. Extremely satisfying… Ah, and now there’s some fresh oysters… The finish is very long, on ‘oyster juice’ and apple juice. Okay, maybe it’s just a tad ‘simple’, otherwise it would have deserved even more than 92 points.
