Nose: we’re well in the same category but with more vanilla, fudge and hints of butterscotch, maybe from the extra-two years (probably not, in fact). A marginally more rounded version, but still a tireless big fruity old malt. Hints of sandalwood and rosehip tea and finally big notes of freshly squeezed oranges. Delicate oakiness in the background (new cupboard). Hard to say which I my favourite, it’s probably on the palate that it’ll all happen. Mouth: mucho bigger than the 36yo, many times richer and certainly of a higher quality in my opinion. Just imagine a blend of many jams and spices plus a little honey and herbs… The oak is perfect. Pink grapefruits, tangerines, lemons, beeswax, soft ginger, Szechuan pepper… State of the art old new Clynelish. Finish: extremely long, extremely clean and extremely well balanced. A little more peat than in the 36yo. Colour: gold. Nose: huge, immediate, full of tar, bandages and antiseptic. Riding an old Ducati Desmo in a long abandoned Michigan hospital. Mouth: absolutely terrific. Menthol, camphor, lemons, more bandages, iodine, ‘good’ rubber, more tar, even more tar, even more tar than that… Phew! Finish: extremely long, tarry, lemony, yet very clean… Epitomical, as they say. Comments: a fat boy for sure. Nose: some sherry (sweetish) and the usual Ardbeg. Very bold and rich. Mouth: great interplay peat-sherry. Lots of iodine, tar, and some burnt tyre notes ala Port Ellen. Long finish, on some strong medicinal notes (campher, bandages). A beauty, and in this case the finishing seems to add some complexity. Nose: very first sniffs suggest that this one is overloaded with sherry but Ardbeg is big whisky as we all know and it does manage to have its say after a few seconds. Reminds me of coffee with plum spirit (ja, Kaffeeschnapps) for a while, but then we have these faintly sourish notes again – nothing unpleasant, though. Something like lemon liqueur-filled chocolate. Also notes of old walnuts, a little rubber, ham (make that York)... As often, big notes of camphor and eucalyptus arise after a moment, liquorice... Also black olives, earth, tar... It’s big but very complex whisky for sure. I’m curious to see if our second sherried Ardbeg (1975 OB) will behave in front of this one. Mouth: hmm, mixed feelings at the attack for there’s kind of a dustiness but then the whole takes off despite its high concentration. Pine resin, thick cough syrup, liquorice, peat, tar and orange marmalade and then spices (cloves, rosemary, nutmeg, cinnamon –lots – and pepper). Hyper-rich, really. Finish: very long, concentrated, maybe just a tad rubbery and oaky again now, with a nice afterglow on peppered plum jam and chocolate.
